Fluid Coupling Principles of Operation.

Postby ManWithAPlan » Sun Jan 10, 2016 8:22 pm

One of my weirdest hobbies is watching these old videos, reading old books, and basically anything pre 1960's. I just find it fascinating and love how easily it's explained and how much understanding I gain from these things. So I thought I'd share this video.

That vid is a great find, and explains a lot of the physics of how a car actually works.

I used to notice that in a Honda, for instance, when I take my foot off the gas, the car pretty much slows down immediately, whereas in a larger American car, the car continues to coast, losing speed gradually instead of suddenly.

The Honda would get better mileage, however.

Different designs in the transmissions and torque converters...vids like this explain this nicely.

Good job, sir.

I am fucking in awe of the engineering ingeniuty of the pre computer times whose crowning archievement was to put man on the moon with less processing power in the module than in modern smart phones.

Lock up torque converters are not new, but indeed they do come on many American cars too. My Chevrolet slows down fast like the Honda.

Short off topic rant:

You know - the vid is in excess of 10 minutes which means it would fail in standard western school classes.

I cannot remember the exact time but the basic attention span has decreased dramatically in recent years :(

I have to admit to being prone to this myself, due to receiving most of my info from foreign media (aka the internet) I am hard pressed to pinpoint WHERE i got the info and find it increasingly harder to double check it if it even seems legit.

As great as the internet is (could not even talk to you guys or know this place existed else) it has brought its own fair share of problems :/

Thanks for the video. I really enjoy these no-nonsense old school videos, you can learn a lot from them. You can tell these videos were made for a generation where a certain level of intelligence & knowledge were expected, as they dont try to dumb down everything.

Fester, the reason for the difference is the emissions control design. In the years just after fuel injection was widely adopted, a number of automakers programmed the engine controls to keep the revs up briefly after the driver takes his foot off the accelerator. The driver would sense this as losing speed gradually instead of immediately if the brakes weren't applied. The reason for this design was that one of the regulated pollutants would spike if the throttle quickly closed.

This had little or nothing to do with the torque converter or transmission. I once had a 1990s Ford Escort with a manual transmission, and the engine revs would briefly, but noticeably, increase on that car as well when I took my foot off the gas pedal. Other cars of the era commonly did the same thing, manual or automatic.

Fuck yea! Think about what Sergei Korolev (head of the Soviet space program) did with a fuckin' slide rule in putting the first artificial satellite into orbit.

I liked how it was explained very simply and to the point but still taught you exactly what you needed to know about the coupling. I think I've had maybe 2 or 3 teachers from elementary to university that was able to explain concepts this well.
