Need some advice on Slavic cuisine

Postby womanhater » Sun Sep 18, 2016 12:43 pm

I'll be attending a potluck event at a Slavic church and need some advice on what to bring. I follow a most unconventional diet personally, but have worked in fine dining before so I'm confident in my abilities vis a vis cooking something new.

Any suggestions?

On my travels through Croatia (Roman Catholic Slavic territory) I did notice a serious indulgence in pizza. Yep, pizza. A dish the world over recognised and appreciated.

I don't think you could go wrong with a handmade pizza crust with the traditional tomato dressing, and maybe topped with some smoked sausage.

EDIT: If it's a Croat crowd you're mixing with, or Europeans familiar with Croatian food, a bottle of good Plavac won't go amiss either. Peljesac peninsula or Hvar will set them off along happy sentimental journeys.

Cartofi gratinati. (This is very similar to French Potatoes)

Plăcinte cu brânză <<< Best shit ever. (My favorite is the one that uses regular "cheese" not the sweet type. Example here.)

There's also this type that we refer to as "Langos".

Salată boeuf.

Ciorba de burtă.

Mici or Mititei.

Zacusca.

Just use google chrome to translate the recipes for those. I'm not sure how it will translate but "branza" is not cheese. It's more of a salty or sweet type of cheese that resembles feta but isn't.

You want to bring something Slavic to the Slavs? But they are just good in being Slavs. (Which means being very good at partying in general.)

I am big in living-with-Slavs aswell, the thing I noticed is they are not the best in terms of desert. Celts and Germanics are much better in deserts, cakes, puddings, that sort of stuff. I would be bringing something like that to the Slavs and not try to be a better Slav then the Slavs themselves.

Yes, yes, I know, I did not say that there not a single decent cake in the Slavic world. But the Swedes are even better bakers, it's like that.

Ask not what you can do for your country - do ask what your country can do to you.

:D

I would be interested in learning something of slavic cuisine as well. Knowing something of their food might give me an edge, when our Russian overlords take over america.

Funny thing about garlic, it keeps away three types of blood suckers: mosquitoes, vampires, and human females.

Fried eggplant in olive oil.

Slather with mayonnaise.

Someone really should do something about this. Women at risk of living life is just unacceptable.
Maybe the platter should be made bigger and more silvery.
