Favorite (non-alcoholic) Drink

Postby Morgu » Mon Oct 19, 2015 8:09 pm

Every man has his favorite drink. Judging by some of the posts, alcohol appears to be the predominant favorite on here. So, for a little change of pace, tell us what your favorite non-alcoholic beverage is.

Morgu will start: Root Beer. (act surprised)
The plan is to try at least one of every root beer on this list: http://www.root-beer.org/modules.php?na ... bop=ctr&s=

That is just under 3 thousand different root beers. Thankfully, most of the listings include a picture and who makes it.

Now it is your turn. What is you favorite drink? (No alcohol)

Water. Nothing beats cold clean water.

I love a good root beer also. So long as its the brewed non alcoholic kind. Here we call it sarsparilla. Its not actually on that list. Though I do believe its exported to the USA as bundaberg root beer. Ginger beer is another favourite.

I don't have them often though. I try to avoid too much added sugar.

Because of that. I've been known to make kombucha from time to time. It can be an acquired taste. But I like it. Its also healthy if you make it yourself so the sugar is minimal.

Mostly just water though. Its got everything a man needs. :p

Aside from a nice glass of ice cold water, my favorite non-alcoholic drink, hands down, is a tie between Yoo-hoo and Borden brand chocolate milk.

Aside from the occasional root beer and ginger ale/ginger beer, I've pretty much eliminated sodas from my diet. One or two every now and then isn't a problem, but I try not to over do it. That being said, my favorite soda is a brand exclusive to a chain of stores called World Market. It's a blend of orange, passionfruit, and mango, and it is hands down the best soda I've ever had (the second best would be the orange flavored Mountain Dew Voltage that was sold years ago).
Image
Seeing as how the nearest World Market is over an hour's drive away from where I live, and the area it's in is usually full of annoying tourists year round, I don't drink it very often.

In my home state there is a company named Blenheim that makes a damn good ginger ale (more like a ginger beer, really).
Image
I've only tried the normal blend, they make an extra-hot blend as well, but the normal is strong enough for me (just one sip will get your sinuses running). I don't even think I could handle the hot blend, it would probably knock the wind out of me.

If it's not alcoholic, then my list is short:

water
coffee
tea

I've been known to drink a fruit juice, but not often

Root beer! Always enjoyed my root beers. Had a lot of different kinds, to the point where I can describe many root beers as my friends do alcohol.

*looks at Morgu's list* Ahhh, a challenge...

 Now I get root beer joke

Personally I do not have favourite non-alcoholic drink. I drink coffee before work, Tiger (cheaper version of RedBull) for energy and tea to fluid replacement.

But... in winter I like very much fresh apple juice. After few hours of sorting those bastards I feel an irresistible desire to cut some, grinding them in a juicer and drink what emerges...

Sweet taste of revenge

Great on those balmy Summer evenings:

Elderflower Mojito:

elderflower cordial (plus a little sugar syrup if you prefer it sweeter), lime juice, mint leaves, crushed ice

1. Pour cordial (and sugar syrup) and lime juice into glass/jug.
2. Slap mint leaves between your palms, then insert them.
3. Pour in crushed ice (I crush it with a rolling pin and an ice bucket).
4. Mix.

The ice melts quickly, so no need for extra water.
The end result is really refreshing and I recommend this recipe highly.

5. (optional): add gin or vodka after deciding you prefer your non-alcoholic beverages alcoholic...

Currently, Cherry Coke Zero.

When I'm allowing myself carbs, Cherry Coke, orange juice (esp when combined with mango, pineapple, banana, etc), apple juice, sometimes a green tea, iced tea with mango/pomegranate/raspberry/other fruit.

Jasmine tea made from the flowers. 木莉花茶
It's bitter but tastes amazing plus, you can reuse the leaves almost all day and the flavor doesn't go away.

A close second is apple cider.
God I love apple cider.

I have never understood why people love coffee so much.. Might just be my taste buds aren't done changing.

I think it's partly the caffeine buzz and the smell.
I always thought it smells better than it tastes.

That being said...every once in a while I make a really great cup that makes me wish I had a gallon of it.
There are things you can do to raise the overall quality of your coffee, but I find that it still varies from day to day.

Buy a $400+ machine.
Grind beans fresh and only as much as you will use.
Use a ceramic burr grinder for more consistently sized granules.
Don't get beans that are over-roasted (looks shiny) as the surface oil will go rancid more quickly.
Don't heat your water to a full boil.
Use a metal filter instead of a bleached paper filter.
If using something like an Aeropress...longer steep times generally result in more bitter/sour coffee.

Strangely enough, a splash of Irish Creme always seems to significantly improve my coffee. ;)
